Post Season Gloom

So, does anybody else suffer at all from the post season gloom? I usually feel a little gloomy after deer season is over. All the excitement that built up during the season is still there, but I feel somewhat depressed and unsure what to do with myself.

I have tried several tactics to eliminate the post season gloom, such as surfing the internet for hunting and fishing stories and things of that nature. I have been somewhat disappointed, however , that people seem to wait a while before posting their hunting pictures online (like a year or two later). If anybody knows where I can find hunting pictures and stories from the current or recently completed Oregon deer hunting seasons, please let me know.

I know there are a lot of things to do after season is over, such as cleaning guns and camping equipment, processing game meat, disposing of or preserving hides and of course finding a spot on the living room or garage wall for the horns of your most recent trophy.

Inevitably, the post season internet browsing leads me to new and exciting hunting and fishing possibilities, such as predator hunting. In January of this year I tried my hand at coyote hunting. I was only able to make it out for one trip. It was very enjoyable, but I didn’t see any coyotes. I’ll have to give her a try again this year. Weather sure seems to be cold enough for it!

Of course, with the new year, you always have the requirement of purchasing a new hunting and fishing license. So, that usually causes some kind of a short delay, since I still can’t seem to get my money tree to grow money in early January. But, I see the hunting and fishing license as a basic life necessity which is unavoidable, regardless of how much it costs. (Pssst, don’t tell Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife that I just posted that last comment!) They did raise their fees again this year. Big surprise…

Speaking (or writing rather) of ODFW, in all your gloominess, don’t forget to do your mandatory reporting of each of the hunts you purchased a tag for this year, regardless of whether or not you harvested the animal.

In a poetic spirit on a recent evening I conjured up a few words to form an acrostic poem. Acrostic poems are simple poems in which the first letter of each line forms a word or phrase (vertically). An acrostic poem can describe the subject or even tell a brief story about it.

So here you have it…

High up in the mountains,
Against the luminescent sky,
Peaks and valleys
Part my view of earth and firmament.
Youthful hopes induce me to try.

Hopes of seeing a blacktail deer
Up steep hills, or at the edge of the clearing.
Now the scene is illuminating.
The exciting flicker of an ear…
Is it a buck I am seeing and hearing?
No, just a bird’s aerial stunts.
Great reigns my quarry on these morning hunts.

Killer poem, huh? Throw me a bone and make a comment.
